Licensing

There are three types of licence which may be appropriate to your business, the Web Database Licence (WDL), the eClips Web Licence (eCW) and Web End User Licence (WEUL).

The Web End User Licence applies to businesses who receive copies or headlines, text extracts and links to newspaper websites, as a part of a paid for media monitoring or news aggregation service.

Which licence is required for my monitoring or news aggregation service?

A Web Database Licence is required by any business:

  • directly scraping newspaper websites and supplying links or copies to clients 
  • receiving a scraped feed of newspaper websites and supplying links or copies to clients

 There are now over 1400 national and regional newspaper websites covered by the WDL.

An eClips Web Licence is required by any business: 

  • receiving a direct eCW feed of newspaper websites and supplying links or copies to clients 
  • supplying links or copies of articles from the eCW feed of News International to clients *

*  eClips Web includes The Sun, The Scottish Sun (including Sun on Sunday), The Times, and the Sunday Times. These titles are excluded from the WDL and are not available through any other source because the publisher prohibits any commercial scraping of the websites.

eClips Web features

eClips Web offers a direct feed of web newspaper articles. The NLA standardises the publisher feeds in order to provide businesses with indexable full-text XML to support monitoring activities and benefits from the following features:

• Delivery in 10 mins on average of all versions of all articles on the website.
• Key fields like date, title, author, section and a direct link to the source website.
• XML full-text and an archived “back-up” of any article even if it has moved.
